In at the Top
The number one spot in this auction was this visually pleasing 1 OOG, £46,959. Possible combinations ‘100 G’ or ‘1 DOG’ or maybe something entirely different to the purchaser.
Second place, 150 HO at £36,058, possible Soho Resident or Business Owner?
In third AVI 5 at £32,193, which would make an instantly recognisable "Avis" plate for promoting an Avis car rental franchise, or maybe ‘AV I5’ are the buyers initials. Fourth was 115 SA at £30,267, possible ladies name ‘L15SA’ and fifth was 154 L at £30,126.
Words
Some strong word plates in this auction were BAD 801S ("Bad boys") at 25,773, BAN 61N ("Bangin'") at £22,691 and THE 900D ("The good") at £20,637. Others on offer included FAS 76R ("Faster") at £19,995, COW 30Y ("Cowboy") at £14,923 and WTF 805S ("WTF Boss") at £13,100.
We also saw the return of the cryptocurrency theme we've observed in previous auctions as CR10 PTO ("Crypto") sold for £12,804.
Names
Some name combinations bought in the June auction included, the previously mentioned 115 SA (LISSA), NAZ 4 ("Naz A", "Naz 4" or "Naza") at £17,427, 84 DAM ("Adam") at £16,181, SOP 1A ("Sophia") at £14,576, BE17 TLY (possible "Bentley" owner) at £12,933 and A88 BAS ("Abbass") at £11,662. Also a few good names lower down the list that went for bargain prices were JUD 3C ("Jude C") which sold for £9,107, FU11 LER ("Fuller") for £8,952 and SV51 NGH ("SV Singh") for £8,439.
Cars
Car references were, as always, a big part of the sale and the usual plethora of possible Porsche plates went under the hammer as 911 JV (£18,120), PJS 911 (£11,649), 911 PUD (£8,156) and 911 JDD (£6,513) all found buyers and of course the BE17 TLY "Bentley" registration mentioned above. A great plate for a VW Beetle or even a Bugatti was BUG 20 (£12,920).
Others
Another popular return was the theme of meaningless symmetry OO04 OOO, which sold for £14,204 which is an excellent example of this trend for those who want strong visual impact without conveying a specific message.
Again the ever popular repeated digit "0" or letter "O" was seen again this month by 125 OOO (£21,279), OOO 5L (£7,784), N70 OOO (£5,177), D100 OOO (£4,998). No obvious meaning but none the less visually striking.
The stats
June's DVLA online auction comprised 2000 lots, 1978 of which were sold and 22 unsold. Purchasers spent a total of £6,308,639, delivering £5,906,276 to the Treasury, slightly less than last month.
The next DVLA timed online auction will take place from Wednesday 24th July to Tuesday 30th July 2024.
